Somali Development Group

Welcome to SDG’s website. This website is to give you an overlook of the types of services provided by Somali Development Group a voluntary group based in Bristol. The work includes working with young people aged 12 to 19 to ensure they meet their full potential.

Young People
Too often decisions are made for young people without consulting them. This tends to be especially the case for excluded young people. For a long time the voices of Somali young people in Bristol have not been heard for various reasons. It is time to bring change in this situation. SDG has taken the lead in this challenging but very rewarding field in ensuring Somali young people’s voices are heard and their ideas drive the decision-making process.

Every Child Matters
Our work with young people consistently tackles the five key areas of the Government’s Every Child Matters policy.

  • Being Healthy
  • Staying Safe
  • Enjoying and Achieving
  • Making a Positive Contribution
  • Achieving Economic Well-being

The Somali Development Group was first set up two years ago and has been thriving well in working with young Somalis who are either at risk of offending or at risk of harm. We work with young vulnerable youths who are disengaged and feel isolated from society.

Alongside supporting young people, our organisation has become a great success in challenging the Somali community in Bristol together with identifying and criticising its shortcoming.

The projects which Somali Development Group are currently working on involves:

  • Preventing radicalism and extremism
  • Mentoring sessions with schools
  • Leisure activities and trips
  • FGM (Female Genital Mutilation)
  • FMU (Forced Marriage Unit)
